Kika Shibata, Riji, Sogetsu School
At the age of four in Kumamoto, Japan, Kika Shibata was introduced to the art of flower arrangement by her mother and inspiring teacher, Shoka Narimatsu. After they moved to the USA, Kika continued to study with Narimatsu sensei and worked as her assistant. She traveled to Japan regularly to study with headmaster Kasumi Teshigahara from whom she received her teacher’s certificate in 1966. In March 1989 she received the prestigious title of Riji, the highest degree offered by the Sogetsu School. Kika’s forte is her unique line design which enhances both living and work environments. She has many clients who seek her ikebana including banks, restaurants, hotels, galleries, and private events. She is frequently invited to conduct demonstrations and workshops by professional floral groups, schools, and community organizations. In 1990 the late headmaster Hiroshi Teshigahara appointed Kika as Deputy Director of the Sogetsu San Jose South Bay Branch, after which she was named Director of the Branch in 2005. Kika’s exemplary contributions were recognized in 1996 with her appointment as Sogetsu Regional Director for North America. In 2001 Kika received Sogetsu’s “International Award” from Headmaster Hiroshi Teshigahara. She has served twice as president of the Ikebana Teachers Federation. Kika often exhibits at museums, for Ikebana International, and local art galleries. For 15 years she has designed and coordinated ikebana for the annual fundraising gala for Self Help for the Elderly Foundation. She has presented demonstrations and workshops for many Sogetsu Branches throughout the country. Kika maintains a busy teaching schedule with classes throughout the Bay Area and in Sacramento
